Our Challenge: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a complex and often misunderstood disease, and a core mission of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (NETRF) is education — getting the facts about NETs to the people who need it most: patients, especially people who have been newly diagnosed and are desperate for information. When we met NETRF’s Development Lead at a conference, she immediately saw the potential for a well-produced podcast about NETs, but where to begin? How to create something that would be accurate, accessible, and engaging?

Over the course of initial conversations, we gravitated towards the idea of doing something in a documentary format, with short clips from multiple conversations in each episode, pulled together by voiceover from a series host as well as original music and immersive sound design. This is a much more demanding concept than doing a typical interview show, of course, but one that we knew would allow bring in a much wider range of techniques and perspectives and to educate our audience in a truly deep and meaningful way.

The Solution: Over the course of dozens of longform audio documentaries, NETWise presents a comprehensive and engaging overview of Neuroendocrine cancer. This starts with episodes exploring the most basic questions a new cancer patient might have: “what is a tumor?” “What is cancer?” “What tests might I need to take and why?” “Who are the members of my care team, and what do they do?”… and then progressing to accurate but accessible descriptions of very complex topics like the mechanisms behind different medications and the biology of cancer growth and metastasis.

Along the way, listeners hear from some of the best experts in the fields of NET research and care: clinicians, researchers, advocates, and policymakers, as well as fellow patients telling the stories of their own NET journeys, from diagnosis to treatment to thriving with the disease long-term.

Results: Since its premiere in 2019, NETWise has built a loyal audience across the disease community and stands as a showpiece of NETRF’s public outreach. It has also drawn corporate sponsorship from several of the most important players in NET-related pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
